SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A portrait of Hollywood star Heath Ledger painted weeks before his death has won an Australian art award.
The painting features a bare-chested Ledger staring from the canvas as two images of the actor whisper into his ears.
On Thursday, it was awarded a secondary prize by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in its annual national portrait competition. Sydney artist Del Kathryn Barton won first prize with her self-portrait.
“Heath” by Vincent Fantauzzo was the popular choice among the 32,000 who saw the exhibition.
Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January. He was 28.

SYDNEY - A portrait of a brooding Heath Ledger, painted shortly before the Australian actor died in January, was voted the most popular painting in Australia’s top art prize for portraiture Thursday.

Ledger, 28, best known for his role as a conflicted gay cowboy in the 2005 movie “Brokeback Mountain,” died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in New York on Jan. 22.

Artist Vincent Fantauzzo, 29, had been friends with Ledger for many years and painted his work in Ledger’s hometown of Perth late last year.

“I wanted it to be dealing with self, your own consciousness and your thoughts,” said Fantauzzo.

The painting features a bare-chested Ledger against a black background, looking straight out of the canvas with two other images of the actor at the sides whispering into his ears.

Fantauzzo’s painting was a finalist in the 2008 Archibald Prize, Australia’s top prize for portraiture, but he missed out on the top award, which went to a self-portrait of an artist with her two children.

But the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Thursday announced that the Ledger portrait had won the people’s choice award, which is decided by votes from people who view the Gallery’s Archibald exhibition.

More than 32,000 people voted, and the painting drew record crowds to the exhibition.

Fantauzzo has refused offers to buy the painting, and said he had spoken to Ledger’s family, who decided the painting would be donated to the New South Wales Gallery in Sydney.

Ledger starred in 18 movies in Australia and Hollywood. He will appear as the Joker in the latest “Batman” movie, “Dark Knight,” set for release in July.

Denzel Washington To NY Kids: Knowledge Is Significant

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - Denzel Washington says inner-city schoolkids have to be reminded that scientists are more important than entertainers.
The Academy Award-winning actor and wife Pauletta award annual scholarships for neuroscience research to college students and make the presentations at city schools. On Friday, they went to Mount Vernon High School in suburban Westchester County. Mount Vernon is Washington’s hometown.
Washington - who won Oscars for his performances in “Training Day” (2001) and “Glory” (1989) - says actors, rappers and basketball stars get more recognition, but someone in a hospital bed is more impressed by a good doctor. He says inner-city students might not be aware of all the opportunities available, and he urged the excited Mount Vernon kids to apply for his scholarships.
Last year, the 53-year-old Washington directed and starred in “The Great Debaters,” based on the real-life victories of a black college debating team in the 1930s.

Smith: Obama Related to Mr, Clinton to Mrs

Tags: , , ,

BOSTON (AP) - This could make for one odd family reunion: Barack Obama is a distant cousin of Brad Pitt, and Hillary Rodham Clinton is related to Pitt’s girlfriend, Angelina Jolie.
Researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society found some remarkable family connections for the three presidential candidates - Democratic rivals Obama and Clinton, and Republican John McCain.
Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother’s side, is also a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette. Obama, the son of a white woman from Kansas and a black man from Kenya, can call six U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, his cousins. McCain is a sixth cousin of first lady Laura Bush.
“You’d think with all that singing talent in the family she’d be able to carry a tune,” Clinton’s senior adviser Philippe Reines said. “But now it makes much more sense how she snagged a Grammy.”
Clinton won for best spoken word Grammy in 1997 for “It Takes a Village.” Obama also won a Grammy in that category this year for the audio version of his book, “The Audacity Of Hope: Thoughts On Reclaiming The American Dream.”
Genealogist Christopher Child said that while the candidates often focus on pointing out differences between them, their ancestry shows they are more alike than they think.
“It shows that lots of different people can be related, people you wouldn’t necessarily expect,” Child said.
Obama has a prolific presidential lineage that features Democrats and Republicans. His distant cousins include President George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison. Other Obama cousins include Vice President Dick Cheney, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and Civil War General Robert E. Lee.
Obama often jokes about his cousin Cheney at campaign appearances.
“His kinships are across the political spectrum,” Child said.
Child has spent the last three years tracing the candidates’ genealogy, along with senior research scholar Gary Boyd Roberts, author of the 1989 book, “Ancestors of American Presidents.”
Clinton’s distant cousins include beatnik author Jack Kerouac and Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles of England.
McCain’s ancestry was more difficult to trace because records on his relatives were not as complete as records for the families of Obama and Clinton, Child said.
Obama and President Bush are 10th cousins, once removed, linked by Samuel Hinkley of Cape Cod, who died in 1662.
Pitt and Obama are ninth cousins, linked by Edwin Hickman, who died in Virginia in 1769. Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, declined to comment on the senator’s ancestry.
Clinton and Jolie are ninth cousins, twice removed, both related to Jean Cusson who died in St. Sulpice, Quebec, in 1718.
The New England Historic Genealogical Society, founded in 1845, is the oldest and largest nonprofit genealogical organization in the country.

LOS ANGELES - The presidential candidates may have star qualities — and they also have stars in their families, according to a genealogical study linking Hillary Clinton to Angelina Jolie and Barack Obama to Brad Pitt.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) in Boston on Wednesday released a study in which it traced the family trees of all three presidential candidates to find they all had famous relatives, both dead and alive.

It found Illinois Senator Barack Obama, whose mother is from Kansas, can claim at least six U.S. presidents as distant cousins, including George W. Bush and his father, Gerald R. Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, Harry S. Truman, and James Madison.

But other cousins include British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill — and Brad Pitt who is a ninth cousin linked back Edwin Hickman who died in Virginia in 1769.

“Obama’s maternal ancestry includes the mid-Atlantic States and the South,” said Christopher Child, a genealogist with NEHGC that dates back to 1845 and describes itself as the United States oldest and largest non-profit genealogical organization.

Meanwhile his Democratic rival, New York Senator Hillary Clinton, shares a common ancestor with Pitt’s partner, actress Angelina Jolie. Clinton and Jolie are ninth cousins twice removed linked by Jean Cusson of St. Sulpice, Quebec, who died in 1718.

Child said Clinton is also a cousin of a number of famous people with French Canadian ancestry, including Madonna (ninth cousins linked by Pierre Gagne of Quebec who died in 1656) Celine Dion, and Alanis Morissette, as well as author Jack Kerouac. Another cousin is Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles.

“It is common to find people of French Canadian descent to be related to large numbers of other French Canadians, including these notables,” said Child in a statement.

Republican nominee, Arizona Senator John McCain, is a sixth cousin of Laura Bush but it was hard track other ancestors.

“McCain’s ancestry is almost entirely southern,” said Child, adding this made notable connections harder to trace because of challenges to genealogists in that region.

Child said having famous cousins makes for interesting conversation but it “should not influence voters.”

“But at a time when the race focuses on pointing out differences, the candidates may enjoy learning about famous cousins and their varied family histories,” he said.

The bench warrant, which didn’t contain details on the circumstances or the location of the offense, was dismissed.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - For one night, Maysville will be Hollywood along the Ohio River, thanks to George Clooney.
The 46-year-old actor-director will visit the northern Kentucky town Monday night for a special screening of his new movie, “Leatherheads,” his father, Nick Clooney, said Tuesday.
“The whole town is abuzz,” said Maysville Mayor David Cartmell.
Clooney, who won an Oscar for his role in “Syriana,” grew up in the town of Augusta, about 16 miles west of Maysville.
The setting has special significance for the Clooney family. In 1953, “The Stars Are Singing,” starring Rosemary Clooney, George Clooney’s aunt, premiered in Maysville.
“He knows all about that, and he is very interested in kind of connecting the dots as far as family history,” Nick Clooney said. “He thinks that would be kind of cool for the family, and one hopes for the town, too.”
Nick and Rosemary Clooney were born in Maysville. George Clooney was born in Lexington, and the family moved several times before settling in Augusta.
“Leatherheads,” which also stars Renee Zellweger, is a romantic comedy set in the world of 1920s professional football. The film will be in theaters April 4.
The movie will be shown at the Washington Opera Theatre, Nick Clooney and Universal Studios said Tuesday.
Cartmell said Monday night’s screening will probably be the biggest event in the town of about 9,000 since the premiere of “The Stars Are Singing.”
It will also be the hottest ticket in town.
Nick Clooney said about 300 seats will be available. The opera house seats about 450 people, but equipment needed to show the movie will take up space in the balcony, he said.
Cartmell said he expects the town to catch Hollywood fever.
“Next week, we’ll be Hollywood on the Ohio,” he said.

Halle Berry doesn’t just play a mom in movies anymore.
The 41-year-old actress had a baby girl Sunday, and “is doing great,” her publicist Meredith O’Sullivan told People.com, the Web site of People magazine. It is her first child.
The father is 32-year-old model Gabriel Aubry. The two met while shooting a Versace ad in Los Angeles two years ago.
Berry told Oprah Winfrey on her show last year that playing a mother in her latest movie, “Things We Lost in the Fire,” helped convince her that motherhood was for her.
“I think it validated that I was meant to be a mother because every day I dealt with the character as a mother and thinking as a mother,” Berry said. “It let me know that I must be a mother.”
Berry won the best-actress Oscar for 2001’s “Monster’s Ball.” She also won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for 1999’s “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.”
Berry had said she and Aubry don’t plan to marry, but feel fully committed to each other.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - David Lynch says his nonprofit foundation will donate $1 million to fund scholarships for students who want to learn a meditation technique taught at the Maharishi University of Management.
Lynch, who directed “The Elephant Man,” “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Dr.” movies and the “Twin Peaks” TV series, is a longtime practitioner of Transcendental Meditation.
Students practice TM as part of their course of study at Maharishi University, which was founded in Fairfield in 1971. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in computer science, art, design, business and sustainable living.
Lynch, 62, plans to give $1 million in scholarships for students to attend the university and learn TM. The goal is to increase the number of students who meditate on the Fairfield campus to 2,000.
He started the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace in 2005.
“America urgently needs at least one university to teach the science of peace - and to actually promote peace in the world,” the filmmaker said in a statement Thursday.
The university will host “David Lynch Weekend” on April 25-28. It will feature performances by Donovan, Moby and Chrysta Bell.

Cinema Ticket Sales Strike Record

Tags: , , , ,

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Moviegoers around the world pushed global box office revenues to a record $26.7 billion in 2007, but rising ticket prices and a weakening dollar accounted for much of the increase, the Motion Picture Association of America said Wednesday.
The group’s annual report said box office revenue outside North America climbed 4.9 percent to $17.1 billion, representing nearly two-thirds of all ticket sales.
Revenues in the United States and Canada increased 5.4 percent to a record $9.6 billion, with admissions unchanged at 1.4 billion tickets sold, and ticket prices 5 percent higher at an average $6.88.
Dan Glickman, chief executive of the association, said the report was good news but acknowledged major studios got a big bump from a weak dollar.
“There’s no question that a significant portion of that increase is due to the currency situation,” he told reporters during a conference call.
The organization did not break out the effect of the currency. But the U.S. dollar fell 6.1 percent against the Canadian dollar and 5.9 percent against the euro from the first week of July 2006 to the first week of July 2007. That boosts U.S. dollar revenues even if ticket prices abroad remain the same.
Total global ticket sales reached $25.5 billion in 2006.
The association, which includes the six major Hollywood studios and their affiliates, also pointed out the increasing impact of high-tech goods on theater attendance.
North American moviegoers averaged 7.9 theater trips in 2007. Those who owned or subscribed to five or more high-tech services or devices involving videos saw 11.4 movies during the year.
“We see consumers very open to the idea of the digital home and their beloved movie house, both having a bright, bright future,” Glickman said.
Some 73 percent of moviegoers researched their picks online before going to the theater, and more than half of those viewed ads or trailers online, the association said.
The report also noted the cost of moviemaking rose.
Major studios such as Paramount, Sony and Walt Disney spent an average of $106.6 million producing and marketing each film, up 6.3 percent from a year earlier. Their subsidiaries, such as Miramax and New Line, saw costs surge 54 percent to an average of $74.8 million per film.
Neither figure factored in the influence of outside investors who have increasingly financed portions of major releases.
The biggest blockbusters of 2007 in North America were Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man 3,” Paramount’s “Shrek the Third” and “Transformers,” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.” All made more than $300 million.

LOS ANGELES - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) on Wednesday released its yearly film industry statistics, reflecting a 5.4 percent increase in U.S. box office receipts in 2007 to an all-time high.

Continuing a recovery that began in 2006 after an industry-wide slump in 2005, domestic box office ticket sales climbed to a record $9.63 billion over the previous year’s level of $9.14 billion.

Admissions were essentially flat in 2007 at about 1.4 billion, according to the MPAA. Higher ticket prices combined with the equal level of admissions produced the boost in overall box office revenue.

For 2007, the average cost of making and marketing a movie for MPAA companies, which include Hollywood’s major studios, rose to $106.6 million, up 6.3 percent from $100.3 million in 2006, surpassing the previous high of $105.8 million in 2003.

The average cost of a ticket rose to $6.88 in 2007 from $6.55 in 2006, or 5 percent.

Worldwide box office grew to an all-time high of $26.7 billion, up 4.7 percent from 2005’s $25.5 billion.

MPAA members include the film and television units of major media companies, Time Warner Inc, Sony Corp, The Walt Disney Co, News Corp, Viacom Inc and General Electric Co and closely held Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.
